Line of Action (180 degree rule)

The image shows how the Line of Action is achieved and where the camera have to be placed in order to achieve this shot. This will be helpful when it comes to using this shot in the Preliminary Task.

Shots needed for the Preliminary task

Match on Action shot = This is an editing technique for continuity editing in which one shot cuts to another shot portraying the action of the subject in the first shot.

The 180 Degrees rule = This is a filming guideline the participants in a scene should have the same left-right relationship to each other, with filming only takign place within the 180 degreeangle in which this is maintaining in a conversation.

Shot Reverse shot = This is an continuity editing technique used in conversations or simply characters looking at each other or objects.

Preliminary and Main task

Preliminary Exercise = continuity task involving filming and editing a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, with whom she/he then exchanges a couple of lines of dialogue. This task should demonstrate an Match on Action shot, Reverse shot and an 180 degrees shot.

Main Brief = The titles and opening of a new fiction film, to last a maximum of 2 minutes. (All videos/audio must be originally produced by the candidates witht he exception of music or radio affects from a copyfright-free source)

 Both preliminary and main tasks may be done individually or as a group - maximum number in a group is 4.
